Curse

Curse is a multimedia and technology company that focused on creating content and products specifically for gamers. Curse has several primary functions: most-notably an add-on and mod management service called Curse Client (similar to Nexus Mods), a gaming wikipedia called Gamepedia, and a Voice Over IP (VOIP) service called Curse Voice.

Curse was founded by Hubert Thieblot in 2006 as a host site for game add-ons and mods. As of December 2016, Curse has about 32 millions monthly unique users, and 5 offices including their headquarters in the USA, UK and Germany.

Curse.com is now a web version of the Curse Client with most of its functions.

1. Create an account

To use the web app, you just have to create a username, and complete the sign up later.

  1. Go to https://www.curse.com.
  2. Click LAUNCH WEB APP on the left.
  3. Type in a username you want, then click LAUNCH, the site will tell you if the username you choose is available or not.

There are 3 more steps to customize your profiles, or just click SKIP ALL to start using the app.

If you want to complete your registration, from the Home section of the app (can be accessed on the left bar), scroll down and choose the tile that displays Claim your account!. Then enter your email, create a password and click CLAIM ACCOUNT on the pop-up window to finish creating your account.

You can also create an account on the client. When you launch the app, click Create an Account below the LOGIN button. Fill out your information, including your desired username, email address and create a password. Then check I agree to the Terms of Service and click REGISTER to finish.

2. Sign in

  1. Go to https://www.curse.com.
  2. Click LAUNCH WEB APP on the left.
  3. Select Login.
  4. Enter your email address and your account password.
  5. Click LAUNCH.

3. Feature

A. Curse Voice

Curse provides a better way for gamers to communicate with their friends and gaming buddies that is Curse Voice. It is a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) system that features non-intrusive call overlays for supported games. Think of it like Skype for gamers. Users can make calls, join group voice chats, and sync their contact and friend list from other services. Curse also allow users to create chat servers, where they can grow a community of their own.

Curse Voice is intergrated in both the web app and the desktop app.

B. Mods and add-ons

Curse is still a hosting site for mods and add-ons of a number of games, most notably add-ons for World of Warcraft, mods and add-ons for Minecraft. Users can browse for mods and add-ons at https://mods.curse.com. Curse also has CurseForge, a website for creators to upload their mod or add-on projects to be reviewed.

C. Gamepedia

Curse launched Gamepedia on December 14, 2012. It is a Curse's community-driven wiki project which aims to be the largest video game wiki platform on the web. As of December, 2016, the site has over 1 million contributors, 3.2 million articles with over 1,300 wikis and 17 million monthly visitors. Gamepedia is home to everything from indie titles to some of the best-known gaming wikis such as the Official Minecraft Wiki, and the Official Witcher Wiki.

D. Client

All of Curse's core services can be found in their client, including Curse Voice, chat servers, mods and add-ons manament service, contacts and friends list. Better yet, the Curse Client is available for all popular platforms that gamers operate on: PC, Mac, iOS and Android.
